Community Guidelines

Last Updated: May 2026

SkydivingIncidents.com exists to help the skydiving community learn from incidents. The goal is collective safety improvement, not blame. These guidelines apply to all users and all content posted on the Site.

3.1 The No-Names Policy

This is the most important rule on this Site.

Do NOT identify anyone involved in an incident by name, call sign, nickname, social media handle, or any other information that could reasonably be used to identify them. This applies to:

  • The person(s) involved in the incident
  • Witnesses
  • Instructors, coaches, or tandem masters
  • Packers, riggers, or other personnel
  • Dropzone staff

If you are the person involved in the incident and wish to share your own story, you may identify yourself only. You may not identify others involved.

Posts that violate the no-names policy will be edited or removed immediately. Repeat violations will result in account suspension or permanent ban.

3.2 Purpose: Learn, Don’t Blame

Every post should contribute to learning.

Focus on:

  • What happened (factual description of the incident)
  • Contributing factors (weather, equipment, experience level, decision-making)
  • Lessons learned (what could be done differently)
  • Questions for the community (seeking insight or analysis)

Do NOT use this forum to settle personal disputes, attack individuals or dropzones, or speculate maliciously about someone’s competence.

3.3 Accuracy and Honesty

Share what you know, be honest about what you don’t. Clearly distinguish between firsthand knowledge, secondhand information, and speculation. Label things appropriately (e.g., “I was there and saw…” vs “I heard from someone that…”).

If you realize something you posted was inaccurate, edit or update your post. Do not knowingly post false information.

3.4 Respect and Civility

Disagreement and debate are welcome. Personal attacks, harassment, bullying, and threatening language are not. Incidents can be emotional topics, especially fatal ones. Approach every discussion with respect for the people involved and their families.

3.5 Sensitive Content

When discussing fatal incidents, serious injuries, or traumatic events:

  • Be factual and measured in your language.
  • Do not post graphic images or videos of injuries or death.
  • Consider that family members, friends, or the individuals involved may read these threads.
  • Do not share private communications (texts, emails, DMs) without permission.

3.6 Categories

Post in the appropriate category. The current categories are:

  • Canopy: deployment issues, line twists, cutaways, canopy collisions, low turns, landing incidents
  • Freefall: instability, collisions, loss of altitude awareness, tracking incidents
  • Gear: equipment malfunctions, packing errors, rigging issues, AAD activations
  • Aircraft: exit incidents, aircraft emergencies, jump run issues, door malfunctions
  • Medical: in-air medical events, hypoxia, blackouts, post-landing medical issues
  • Near-Miss: close calls that did not result in injury but could have
  • Lessons Learned: reflective posts focused on personal takeaways and safety improvements

3.7 Reporting Violations

If you see a post that violates these guidelines, report it using the reporting function on the forum. Do not engage in public arguments about rule violations. Let the moderators handle it.

3.8 Consequences

Violations of these guidelines may result in:

  1. First offence: post edited or removed, written warning issued.
  2. Second offence: temporary account suspension (7 to 30 days).
  3. Third offence or serious violation: permanent ban.
  4. Severe violations (doxxing, threats, deliberate misinformation): immediate permanent ban.

All moderation decisions are at our sole discretion and are final.

3.9 No-Names Policy Enforcement Points

The no-names rule is enforced at multiple touchpoints:

  • Registration: users must acknowledge the no-names policy during account creation.
  • Posting: a reminder appears above every new thread and reply form.
  • Automated filters: common name patterns are flagged for moderator review.
  • Moderator review: all new posts from new accounts are reviewed before publication.
